Happy Hour: The FRYE Bootstrap cocktail

Who knew you could make a fall-time cocktail with

rum

? I typically associate rum with summer: Beach, ocean, mojitos, you get the picture.

But last Thursday, I was proven wrong. The Bootstrap cocktail — the signature drink served at Atlanta’s flagship boutique for the

FRYE Company

during the launch of their

Modern Icons

collection — tasted just like freshly baked apple pie, and it was made with Richland rum.

Oh yeah, Lauren Cohan (Maggie from The Walking Dead) was at this event! (c) Shelby Stechbauer

Granted, I do have to give a lot of credit to

Richland rum

for the cocktail’s rich (pun intended) flavor. Aged in oak barrels — and made right here in Georgia! — Richland is smooth, but has a deep, intense flavor that more resembles bourbon than clear rum.

I really enjoyed the taste, and if

Garden & Gun

can’t stop raving about it, it’s definitely good enough to put in my drinks this fall.

I couldn’t get enough of the Bootstrap cocktail at FRYE’s event, and I can’t wait to make it for my friends now that fall is officially here. Check out the recipe below and enjoy on a patio during a crisp, cool fall night.

The Bootstrap

Ingredients

2 oz Richland rum

.5 oz lime juice

.5 oz lemon juice

.5 oz Aperol

.75 oz simple syrup

2 dashes Angostura bitters

2 dashes Peychauds bitters

Directions

Combine all ingredients and shake in a cocktail shaker. Strain into a rocks glass, and garnish with a Granny Smith apple.
